On Saturday there was the annual open day at EcoSort, the Christchurch City Council recycling plant. It was a super eye-opening experience, and I found it fascinating to see the life cycle of a tin cans and actually realised I put some things in the recycling bin that cannot be recycled. It was a great opportunity to learn about the recycling process and walking through the plant. One thing I really wanted to know about was how the sorting was done but I didn’t get enough time for it.

Even though the sorting equipment wasn’t operating on the day for health and safety reasons, we were still able to get up close to the massive machinery and see enormous bundles of all types of recycling, from stacks of crushed cardboard to bales of plastic bottles tightly packed in. The size of the operation was incredible, and it was fascinating to see just how much stuff they sort through.

It was highly interactive, with plenty of hands-on learning and a friendly team of staff available to answer questions. They gave excellent insight into what happens to our recycling, the problems of contamination, and how we can all do our part to recycle correctly. They had engaging activities which was great to hold interest of the younger ones and highlighted the importance of recycling responsibly.
